Ethics in AI: Innovating Responsibly with Respeecher’s Anna Bulakh

In today’s rapidly evolving world of technology, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly integral part of our lives. But with the power of AI comes great responsibility, especially in areas where it can be used to create synthetic content like deepfakes. To explore the intersection of AI, ethics, and privacy, I had the privilege of speaking with Anna Bulakh, the Head of Ethics and Partnerships at Respeecher.

Meet Anna Bulakh

Anna Bulakh is not your typical AI expert. With over a decade of experience in security and defense policies, Anna transitioned into the tech world, focusing on countering disinformation and eventually entering the AI space. She’s now at the forefront of ensuring the ethical use of AI in creating AI-generated tools, including voice cloning and deepfakes. Anna also serves as a member of the AI committee at the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, where she helps shape regulations around AI technology.

Respeecher: A Pioneer in AI Voice Cloning

Respeecher is an innovative AI startup founded in 2018, specializing in voice cloning technology. Their AI technology allows individuals to speak in the voice of another person, and they have collaborated with some remarkable individuals, including the iconic Mark Hamill, who provided the voice of Luke Skywalker in “The Mandalorian.” Respeecher’s work extends beyond the entertainment industry, earning them an Emmy for their contribution to the short film titled “In the Event of Moon Disaster,” where they helped recreate Richard Nixon’s voice. Their work is fascinating but of course, with the power to manipulate voices and create convincing deepfakes, come ethical concerns. Anna sheds light on how Respeecher is addressing these challenges while enabling innovation.

The Balance Between Innovation and Ethical Responsibility

1. Impact Evaluation

One of the core principles guiding Respeecher’s approach is understanding the impact of AI technology on society. Anna emphasizes the importance of considering how AI-generated content can influence public perception, potentially create disinformation, and manipulate information. This consideration is vital in defining the company’s ethical boundaries and evaluating project contexts. Some projects are deemed too sensitive, especially when dealing with recreating the voices of deceased individuals, and are thus either not pursued or consent is received from the appropriate party.

2. Protecting Personal Data

AI-generated content often relies on biometric data, such as voice samples or facial embeddings. Respeecher takes a proactive approach by always seeking permission to recreate an individual’s voice. When dealing with the voices of deceased individuals, they require permission from family members, the state, or copyright holders. This emphasizes the company’s commitment to protecting personal data, which is commendable and should be used as an example for other companies.

3. Content Moderation

Respeecher has introduced a voice marketplace where over 100 voices are available for use, and strict content moderation is in place. This moderation ensures that the technology is used responsibly and prevents the dissemination of harmful or fraudulent content.

4. Self Data Governance

Respeecher is transparent about how they handle data. They never use client data to train their base models, ensuring that personal data is protected and not exploited.

Navigating the Negative Narrative

In the age of rapidly advancing AI, concerns about data privacy and security are widespread. Anna Bulakh emphasizes the need to combat the negative narrative surrounding technology with practical solutions. She highlights the importance of self-regulation, transparency, and cooperation between companies and policymakers to build trust in technology while addressing its potential risks.

Advice for Aspiring AI Professionals

For students interested in pursuing a career in AI or technology, Anna Bulakh offers valuable advice. She encourages them to be multidisciplinary, explore various fields of study, and seek opportunities to broaden their knowledge. Transitioning between sectors should not be seen as cutting ties but as an opportunity to apply existing skills to new areas. Anna also underscores the importance of public-private partnerships, where humanitarian studies and technology intersect. She suggests that students attend intensive programs and summer schools to meet experts and gain hands-on experience.

Get Involved

Anna Bulakh and Respeecher are open to taking interns (yay!), offering students an opportunity to contribute to innovative AI projects. Students who are interested in AI ethics, technology, and innovation should consider reaching out to companies like Respeecher for internship opportunities. In the ever-evolving world of AI, technology, and ethics, individuals like Anna Bulakh are leading the way in ensuring that innovation and responsible use of technology go hand in hand. Respeecher’s commitment to ethics and privacy sets a commendable example for the AI industry. As technology continues to advance, we must remember the importance of protecting personal data and upholding ethical standards.
